Commonly, the lens in the eye becomes thicker and less supple with age, resulting in presbyopia: a condition that leads to difficulty focusing on nearby objects. Many may wonder if they are too old for LASIK surgery to improve their vision - luckily reading glasses are often enough to correct the issue in most cases.
If you are over the age of 21, LASIK laser eye surgery may be an option for you at the Rochester Eye and Laser Center. However, some conditions such as presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, and large pupils cannot be corrected using this method. People with autoimmune disorders or taking certain medications which pose a risk during the procedure; as well as those who smoke or have untreated eye infections or injuries in their medical history are not eligible for LASIK surgery.
If you are in good overall eye health and meet the criteria for LASIK, then age does not affect your eligibility. However, those aged 60 or over may benefit more from a refractive lens exchange or refractive cataract surgery as these procedures can help correct issues such as cataracts, astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, and presbyopia.
