Will LASIK help me see up-close?

Will LASIK help me see up-close?

What is causing the increase in nearsightedness?

Nearsightedness (myopia) is increasingly becoming a concern for people of all ages and backgrounds around the world. Previously linked mainly to genetics, myopia now impacts approximately one in three Americans aged 12 to 54, with environmental factors playing a crucial role. Although genetic predisposition to myopia cannot be altered, our modern lifestyle—characterized by prolonged screen time and reduced outdoor activities—has significantly contributed to the condition's growing prevalence among children, teenagers, and adults. Early detection and management of myopia are essential, as unchecked progression can elevate the risk of severe eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration.

Increased screen use and reduced exposure to natural light are key drivers of the sharp rise in myopia cases over the past few decades. Digital devices like smartphones, tablets and computers require intense focus on near objects, causing eye strain and signaling the eye to elongate, which worsens nearsightedness. Simultaneously, limited time outdoors reduces exposure to natural light, which helps regulate eye growth by stimulating dopamine release. These combined factors are not just impacting children but also affecting teens and adults who rely heavily on digital tools for work, education and recreation.

Can LASIK help?

Although myopia cannot be completely cured, advanced treatments like LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) provide transformative, lasting correction for individuals looking to be free from glasses or contact lenses. LASIK alters the shape of the cornea to enhance the way light is focused on the retina, effectively eliminating or greatly reducing nearsightedness. This fast and minimally invasive procedure boasts a high success rate and is an ideal choice for adults whose myopia has stabilized.

For children and teens who are not candidates for LASIK, the focus is on slowing the progression of myopia and safeguarding long-term eye health. Treatment options include atropine eye drops, specialized contact lenses such as Ortho-K, and myopia control glasses. Lifestyle adjustments are equally crucial: reduce screen time, adhere to the 20-20-20 rule (taking a break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), and promote outdoor activities—studies indicate that just 90 minutes of natural light daily can have a significant impact.

Whether you're managing a child's developing eyesight or tackling the challenges of adult myopia, the first step is a comprehensive eye exam. At the Rochester Eye and Laser Center, we provide customized solutions to address individual needs, from slowing myopia progression to considering permanent options like LASIK. By emphasizing proactive care and modern treatments, we aim to ensure clearer, healthier vision for everyone, at every stage of life.
