Have you ever noticed that your eyes seem more sensitive during the endless winter months? It’s true! Winter can absolutely be rough on your eyes. Our team at the Rochester Eye & Laser Center has compiled a few tips to ease your eyes throughout the coldest season of the year. Dry, heavy winds often accompany the frostiest months in Upstate New York.
If you’ve ever vacationed in a warm, sunny climate during the winter, you may have noted that upon your return, your eyes actually felt different when re-exposed to the cold.
If you enjoy spending long periods of time outside during the winter months, you'll need to watch out for the sun’s damaging UV rays, as they bounce off snow and ice, back up into your eyes. That means you’re not just exposed to UV rays from above, but from all around you. Taking into consideration the increased risk of sun damage from the ice and snow, we suggest polarized sunglasses or ski goggles, for increased protection.
When inside, most home heating systems are known to drain moisture out of the air, all of which may result in dryness of the eyes., a humidifier can help restore moisture to the air. There are also drops available to help moisturize. If you’re still experiencing dryness issues, reach out to your trusted eye care professional. You may need a prescription to help your eyes get back to normal.
We know it seems like the cold weather months will never end, here in Rochester. At the Rochester Eye & Laser Center, we want to be sure you are monitoring your eye health and any adverse effects that the harsh climate may have on your vision and comfort.
